The Flakefall Cervid

ISSUE #1: My Unsightly Return

It's been a while! Perhaps I promised much -- monthly poem recaps evidently haven't been happening. (Bluesky always has them, though! And tumblr has some!)

Projects come and go, yet I find it difficult to finish any given one. Life, as has my mood lately, has ups and downs. Perhaps I should resolve to start another thing that I won't uphold: returning to blog posts, preferably with substance! Life gets hectic and determination gets scarce, but I want to always find the time to write. So then, say hello to the Flakefall Cervid, an intention to write more and share even the tiniest tidbits of stuff with anybody who stumbles across this site. (Speaking at nobody until somebody comes; they say fake it 'til you make it!)

LIFE FEELINGS:

As touched on previously, my feelings have been heavily fluctuating lately. I've been dragged back into a beyond grindy video game that sucks up a lot of my time and energy -- but I can't say it doesn't keep me occupied. I am also consistently in the throes of feeling like I'm not doing enough, and I'd say that's a can of worms to open another day but it is very relevant to this blog, methinks. So as to not drag the post down, or fatten it up unnecessarily: don't expect a consistent blog. I'll aim for weekly, but if that is far too much for me to chew, then I'll dial it back. But! I will absolutely try to write here as much as I can, I believe it may be able to provide me with some well needed consistency.

MYSTERY PROJECT:

Oooh, a mystery! Actually, I've started quite a few projects in the past few months and haven't finished any of them, or even come close! My main goal is to have at least ONE of them done by the end of the year. Two months left. Don't know if I will accomplish this, but a procrastinatory writer can dream... Amongst these projects, if anybody wants to nudge me towards their favourite: an audio formatted scenario where Chronic Wasting Disease evolved to transmit to humans; a story of two doomed lovers through the lens of a cheesy recipe website; and a string of consciousness type story with lots of horrible terrible things and feelings. I've got a personal favourite (the former) so I have a feeling that'll be the one I pump out first! (Also: hoping to make some site updates here, sorry for the wait!)

COOL STUFF:

Inspired by the Tom Scott newsletter that I subscribed to ages ago and still occasionally read in my inbox, I will aim to link a few cool things each edition!

Meditations (Various Artists): A neat ambient album I discovered on YouTube. I'm always a sucker for ambience like this but I hardly ever remember any given individual album -- I shall leave this here as an apology for my lack of memory (a hyperlink rarely forgets!)

Flawed Peacock: A youtuber I discovered after watching his Home Safety Hotline lore video; he makes incredibly long deep dives into really neat things and I highly recommend taking a look around. Seeing someone so passionate and go into such detail into things really gets me excited. Even if the majority of my video watching is in the background, I still find myself focusing on Peacock's videos and becoming entranced by his way of explaining things.

Return of the Obra Dinn: And finally, a game I purchased recently and particularly love. It's a murder mystery, except you aren't solving one murder: you're solving the deaths and disappearances of roughly 60 crew members aboard a supernatural ship. You're armed with a pocketwatch that lets you jump into the past to see the moments of people's deaths, and must figure out who they are (from the crew log) and how they died. If anything, play for the incredible art style and audio atmosphere -- despite being entirely black and white I feel like I'm actually walking around investigating the still of a gruesome, stormy crime scene as it happened.

Happy Halloween, my friends! And may we meet again :)
